Help Understanding the Purpose of Homework Assignments

1 The Purposes of Homework Assignments

Homework assignments are designed to help you remember (i.e., recall facts and concepts), understand (i.e., explain facts and concepts), and apply (i.e., use facts and concepts in new situations) the topics covered in readings and lectures. They also help you assess your progress in these regards.

2 How to Approach Homework Assignment

You should always finish the relevant readings, attend the relevant lectures, and study before you try to complete a homework assignment. You should not be constantly flipping through your notes or textbook while completing homework assignments. Instead, you should only resort to your notes/textbook when absolutely necessary.
